A SONG OF REAL MARRIAGE

October 5, 2009

PSALM 45. A SONG OF REAL MARRIAGE

This hymn of royal marriage was almost certainly caused by the wedding ceremony of a Hebrew king with some foreign princess. ). The identity of this king is uncertain, because their war activities (3.5) is hardly consistent with Solomon (cf. 1 Kings # 3.1), and his devout character (6-7) is not in conformity with the character of Ahab, at least after his marriage to Jezebel (# 1 Kings 16:31).

This song was included in the Psalter as illustrating an idea that is often used in Scripture, namely that the ratio of human marriage is an echo, or at least an allegory of the covenant relationship between God and His people. e segs.; #Mt 25.1 e segs.; #Ap 19.6-9 ). The same basic idea is conveyed to the New Testament where the church is described as the Bride of Christ (see 2 Cor # 11.2; and cf. Ff # 22.2 and Mt.; # Mt 25.01 et seq. # Rev 19.6-9).

a) Introduction (1)

The song is properly titled Song of Love, that is, kind things. Apart from this brief introduction of the first verse, there are two sections related to the groom and bride, respectively. In the opening verse the author describes his irrepressible desire to talk about something particularly good and pleasant, appreciative feelings of pleasure in favor of the king, who are literally "overflowing" and he expects the eloquence of his pen is worthy of such glorious theme.

> Sl-45.2

b) Praise to the real boyfriend (2-9)

The king is the uncle superior in beauty and grace of language to all other men that it is obvious that God especially favored and would continue to provide their offspring, also, His divine blessing. It is called a "hero" (3). ). It is recommended that you strap on a sword, and also gird his glory and majesty (cf. # Rev 19.14-16) and ride victoriously "the cause of truth" (4, cf. Is # 11.4). On such occasions to demonstrate their bravery great and terrible things (see # Ps 145.5-6). ); Ele é capaz de cavalgar por cima dos caídos e enviar suas setas contra os corações de seus principais inimigos (5). His arrows are so acute that your injury is fatal (cf. Ps 18:14 #, # Heb 4:12) He can ride on top of the fallen and send their arrows against the hearts of their main enemies (5).

> Sl-45.6

Your throne is God (6). Better translation would be: "Your throne is the throne of God." This is why his dynasty would remain forever (cf. 2 Samuel 7:12-16 & #.) The flag and emblem of its sovereignty is justice and fairness, because he abhors iniquity. ; #1Pe 1.8 ). And because of this effective zeal for justice that God gave him a joy more fully than any other man can know (cf. Jn 3:29 #, # Heb 12.2; # 1 Pet 1.8). The citation of the verse. 6:07, in # Heb 1.8-9 is a specific instance of New Testament interpretation of the Old Testament, upon the character and work of Christ.

The groom is dressed in clothes fragrant, and the halls of his palace, tastefully decorated with ivory bas-reliefs, are taken from soft music. Among her bridesmaids daughters of kings, there is evidence of his prestige among the neighboring states-and immediately next to it, adorned with fine gold, lies his queen. This introduces the next section of the poem. Myrrh, aloes, (8), cf. Ct # 4.14. Cassia (this Hebrew word is found only here) is perhaps a kind of cinnamon.

> Sl-45.10

c) Praise to the bride (10-17)

The change of subject is implied by an appeal to the young bride, whose attention was probably partially diverted by the novelty of their environment. She is urged to accept everything when she sees as part of his new life, and also ban any regrets for the friends and scenes of his past life of a child. But it should identify its interests to those of her husband, who is also his king, he will reward their loyalty and cooperation with affection. Bend down before Him (11) That is, you submit it, loves it. After describing the environment and to give advice and security to the princess, the poem talks about his hopes inside the palace, brilliantly adorned in her wedding garment, where it will be brought to the king "in embroidered robes" (14), accompanied by their ladies virgins and cheerful music.

The remaining words on the future, are addressed to the king, as is implied in verse. 17: Thy name I will do ... The psalmist will do this through your poem. ... from generation to generation. Cfr vers. 2.6, # 2 Sam 7.13,16,25,29.
